The 10th Annual Eco Summit Celebrates Major Sustainability Achievements at Waterloo University

On November 22, 2023, the University of Waterloo's Sustainability Office hosted its tenth-annual Eco Summit, bringing together students, faculty members, and staff to showcase sustainability achievements, celebrate progress, and build connections with the campus community. The event underscored the importance of collective action in addressing the devastating impacts of climate events worldwide.

As Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor, emphasized during his opening remarks, it is crucial that we take immediate action not only to mitigate the effects of climate change but also to support those who will be disproportionately affected by its consequences. The summit focused on accelerating sustainability initiatives in teaching and research activities, highlighting the urgent need for innovation and entrepreneurship in solving environmental challenges.

The event featured inspiring stories from student leaders who are making a difference in their community. Jason Amri, co-founder of 3cycle, Maya Morton Ninomiya, undergraduate representative of the Curriculum Integration Working Group, Celine Isimbi, co-founder of Climate Justice Ecosystem, and Evan VanderMeer, Indigenous entrepreneurship coordinator at United College, shared their experiences and insights on how to drive sustainability forward.

The Waterloo Eco Summit serves as a testament to the power of collective action in promoting environmental stewardship.
